When winding wool from a hank to a cake, I usually like to wind it twice. The first time the tension can be uneven because of how wool naturally pulls off a swift, especially if parts are tucked under or there is some yarn barf in there. By winding it a second time, your cake is much more evenly tensioned, making it easier to knit from.
